From brand-approved design to spent balance, in five steps.
Set it up once. After that, it runs alongside the rest of your catalog — the same product flow, the same checkout, with one extra payment tender.
Pick a template (or design your own)
Open Gift Card Settings → Templates. Use a seeded seasonal default, deactivate the ones you don’t want, or save a fresh design in the Designer and attach it as a template source.
Create a Gift Card Product
It's a regular catalog product, just with a gift-cards type. Attach a saved design, set status, choose expiry rules and recipient delivery options.
Define your denominations
Set fixed values (think $25, $50, $100). The catalog automatically creates value variants as subproducts — one SKU per denomination — ready for the storefront.
Customers buy — for self or recipient
A customer can buy a card for themselves and use it instantly, or pick recipient delivery. The recipient gets a secure claim link and the card lands in their account.
Cards redeem at checkout, balance comes back on refunds
At checkout, a card is applied as payment tender. Partial balances are supported. Refund an order paid with a card and the balance restores automatically — with a refund ledger row.
Gift cards are store credit, not coupons.
Most ecommerce platforms treat gift cards as a clever workaround on top of their coupon engine. That works until your bookkeeper asks how much you owe customers in unspent balance.
BCC's Gift Cards module treats them the way they actually behave on a balance sheet — the customer pays you first, then later spends down a balance you owe them. Every step is recorded:
- Issuance is tracked.Paid orders create an active card; unpaid orders create a pending one. Either way, there's a record.
- Redemption can't double-spend.Card rows are locked during checkout, so two people can't drain the same balance at the same instant.
- Refunds restore balance. If you refund an order paid (even partially) with a gift card, the balance comes back to the card with a refund ledger row.
- Liability is one report.Outstanding balance, by product, status, and date — ready to drop into your monthly close.
What dealers ask us most
Can my customers add gift cards to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet?
Yes — once you enable the providers in Gift Card Settings, active issued cards get an “Add to Apple Wallet” or “Add to Google Wallet” action on the customer’s My Gift Cards screen. Admins also get the same actions on the issued-card grid.
What if I want Apple Wallet but not Google Wallet (or the other way around)?
Each provider has its own toggle. Disabled providers hide their settings, preview, and customer-facing action automatically — admins only see the controls they can actually use. The page-level GiftCards module also has its own master toggle: when it’s off, every GiftCards menu item disappears except settings.
Can I edit the seasonal templates that ship pre-loaded?
Yes. Open Gift Card Settings → Templates. The seeded defaults (USA 250th Birthday, Christmas Santa / Snowman / Presents, Thanksgiving, Mothers Day, Happy Holidays, Birthday variants) are real database rows — rename them, change category and sort order, deactivate the ones you don’t want shown, or replace the artwork by attaching a saved Designer design as the new template source. The default rows seed exactly once, so renaming them won’t cause duplicates later.
Do I need a separate plugin or third-party gift card service?
No. Gift Cards is a first-class module inside BCC, installed and updated like any other Shop submodule. No external service, no extra contract, no syncing back to a different system. The data lives in your store database and the admin lives inside BCC.
Can a customer buy a gift card for someone else?
Yes. At checkout the customer chooses delivery type — self purchase or recipient delivery. With recipient delivery, the recipient gets a secure claim link tied to their email. Once they sign in or create an account, the card lands in their My Gift Cards view and is ready to spend. Version 1.0 supports one recipient per gift card line item.
Can a customer use a card for part of an order and pay the rest with a credit card?
Yes — partial redemption is fully supported. The card balance applies as payment tender against the order total; whatever remains is collected with the customer's other payment method. The card's remaining balance stays available for next time.
How does refunding an order paid with a gift card work?
The balance is automatically restored to the original gift card and a refund ledger row is written. If the order was paid partially with a card and partially with another method, each tender is restored to its source. Your liability and ledger reports reflect the round-trip.
Can two customers accidentally spend the same balance at the same time?
No. Redemption uses row locking on the card record, so concurrent checkouts can't double-spend. If two attempts arrive in the same instant, the second waits until the first commits — and the available balance has already been reduced by the time it gets its turn.
